The
Effects of a Tsunami
When a tsunami is coming towards the shore, destruction is imminent. A
tsunami cannot be stopped once it becomes a huge wall of water
bearing down on the land.
It will destroy everything in its path until all of its energy is dispersed.
For this reason a tsunami can destroy many miles of property inland and it
is very hard to predict how far inland people must be evacuated. Along
with the huge impact on the lives of the people and the property of the places
that get hit by tsunamis, terrible destruction also occurs elsewhere. Scientists
believe that tsunamis will have a long-term ecologically damaging effect on the
coastlines that they strike. Damaged coral reefs take years to recover
since they only grow about half a centimeter a year.
