What to do During a Tornado

  • Go to a basement or any place away from windows. In apartments or small buildings, go to a bathroom or small place with no windows. In a mobile home, get out immediately, you have a better survival chance out in the open than in the house. If the park has a tornado shelter, go to it as soon as possible. If in a school, go to the safe location as directed by your instructor.  Maintain the crouched position with arms protecting your head until the all-clear is given.
  • If you're outside, go to a shelter.
  • If no shelter is available, lay flat on the ground with your hands protecting the back of your head.
  • Stay away from cars and trees because they can be blown towards you.
  • If you are in car or truck, get out of the tornado's path. If you cannot, then abandon the car or truck and find a safe place to hide.
  • If in a mall or store, go into a bathroom or storage closet, anywhere away from windows. Above all,  do not panic.
  • If in a theatre or church, go into a bathroom, storage room or closet, and crouch with arms protecting your head.
