  • Check the news channel on radio or TV from time to time.
  • Keep flash light, portable radio and plenty of batteries handy.
  • Keep half a tank or more of gas in your car along with some extra money.

  • Stock up on canned foods, bottled water, candles, matches, and any medications you need to take. Also have a manual can opener handy.
  • Learn safe routes inland.
  • Find and review your home insurance information.
  • Make a family hurricane plan.

  • Keep rain gutters and downspouts free of debris and clogs.
  • Know how to turn off utilities.

During Hurricane Warning

  • Monitor the TV or listen radio for news.
  • Board up your windows and doors.
  • Keep photos or video of your house.
  • Fill containers and bathtubs with water.
  • Photo copy personal IDs, credit cards, insurance policies and other, put them in the watertight container with other emergency supplies.

After the Hurricane

  • Avoid all downed power lines, and keep children and pets away from them.
  • Return back to your home, if instructed to do so.
  • Do not drive through or across water.
  • Stay away from standing water.
  • Only use tap water for drinking or cooking if local officials say it is safe. 
  • Take pictures of damaged property.
  • Use battery power only for light, never use a candle.
